One place that’s often overlooked is Zhongshan Mall, a small shopping centre next to the picturesque Zhongshan Park, and opposite the historical Sun Yat-Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. 1. Seven Daze

Craft beers and Asian-inspired dishes take centre stage at Seven Daze, a spacious restaurant and bar right next to Zhongshan Park. Order their spicy Tom Yum Seafood Risotto ($19++), which comes with manila clams and tiger prawns, and zhng it up with pan-seared clams, squid, seafood tofu and caviar for a $12++ top-up.  Otherwise, the Salt-Baked Chicken ($34++) is another clear winner that’s great for sharing. This features a whole chicken marinated in Chinese herbs, coated in salt, and baked to juicy perfection.

2. Thai Tai

Feast on legit Thai food with the fam at Thai Tai, a cosy eatery on the ground floor of Zhongshan Mall. Their signature Pork Knuckle ($16/$28), served with pickles, is said to be well-braised and tender. There’s also the highly recommended Khao Soi ($8/$10), a Thai curry noodle dish that’s popular in Chiang Mai. Each serving comes with egg noodles in a creamy coconut gravy, topped with crispy noodle pieces and pickled mustard greens. For a no-frills Japanese dining experience, drop by Otou-San Hokkaido Donburi for their affordable range of chirashi don, bento sets and more. Their signature Bara Chirashi Don is priced at just $12.90, and is loaded with fresh salmon cubes, tamago chunks, and cucumber for a refreshing crunch. There’s a bigger $16.90 option if you’re feeling extra hungry. Other value-for-money picks are their Vegetarian Japanese Curry Bento ($10.90) and Deep Fried Ebi Curry ($9.90), the latter of which comes with a bed of rice, Japanese curry and two crispy prawns.

Stackz is a highly-rated American-style diner that offers all-day breakfast, burgers, and fusion dishes. Try their Morning Flapjacks ($12.90++): house-made pancakes with turkey bacon, hashbrown, scrambled eggs, and baked beans. Each set comes with veggies, dhal, and your choice of rice, naan or roti, so you’ll feel satiated. Meat lovers can opt for the Chicken Tikka Meal ($14+) or Mutton Meal ($14+). If you’re out to splurge on a full feast, the Indian restaurant has a wide selection of starters, mains, and tandoori platters worth sharing. Dabao the popular McSpicy Extra Value Meal (from $8.65) if you can take the heat, or try the relaunched Jjang Jjang Burger for a limited time only!
