Arlene Schnitzer dies at 91

Arlene Schnitzer, the longtime Portland cultural philanthropist and pioneering art gallery owner, died Saturday afternoon, April 4, 2020. She was 91 years old and died of natural causes, her son, Jordan Schnitzer, told KATU-TV. “Her son Jordan tells me she died in his arms this afternoon,” KGW-TV anchor and reporter Brittany Falkers said on Facebook. “He says she had ongoing health issues and her death was not related to the coronavirus.” Arlene Schnitzer, courtesy of the Portland Art Museum Schnitzer was a towering cultural figure in Portland and the Pacific Northwest, giving many millions of dollars over several decades to...

Spicy cold sesame noodles

Spicy cold sesame noodles

One of the most delicious things I ate in China last year were these cold sesame noodles I got at the Muslim market in Xi’an, Shaanxi. They were spicy, creamy, and nutty, with just a hint of sweetness and a refreshing crunch from the cucumbers and bean sprouts. So imagine my delight when I found this cold sesame noodle recipe from NY Times Cooking. I adapted it slightly to make these. Namely, I added water and extra vinegar to thin out the sauce and make it tangier, I cut down the sugar, and I added chili flakes for an extra...

Grilled Cod Cheeks with Szechwan Peppercorn Marinade

This recipe for Grilled Cod Cheeks with Szechwan Peppercorn Marinade is something I developed after visiting Newfoundland and Labrador last summer. Though my friends in Newfoundland will think it’s blasphemy, I used west coast Ling Cod Cheeks as fresh Atlantic cod cheeks were not available to me at that time. I’ve also used halibut cheeks when they are in season and they’re delicious too. For folks living in the land-locked Prairies or west coast, I highly recommend Skipper Otto as a sustainable source of fish. Here in Calgary, you can actually get Fogo Island Fish Hand Line Cod from a...

The Virus Diaries: Rationing

[Day zero and day 1 of the Virus Diaries] We had our first ration rage incident last night. For context, you should know that 8 year-old Louisette has inattentive ADD and she takes Ritalin. She barely eats as a rule—here is the aftermath of a typical breakfast:                     That is lemon butter and honey on white bread. She has eaten one bite and then declared herself full. Obviously, we’re long since given up on the idea of a healthy breakfast and we just try to get her to eat SOMETHING. Ritalin...

CILANTRO CHAPATIS

CILANTRO CHAPATIS

I love, love, looooooove chapati, and if I wasn’t watching my waist I’d probably eat them every day for ever. Chapati is the beautiful unleavened flat pan- grilled bread eaten in the Eastern African countries of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, and Mozambique. Though they originated as an import from the Indian settlers, chapatis have become part of the East African’s culinary heritage. The best ones are light and soft and can either be plain of flaky. My mum makes the absolute best ones and whenever I visit my parents, am always looking forward to a chapati feast. I am still...
